EXCLUSIVE: Yellow Veil Pictures Acquired Worldwide Sales Rights to Corey Deshon’s Debut Feature the girl and will present the project to buyers in Cannes later this month. Casper Van Dien, Elyse Dinh, Ian Alexander and Vivien Ngô star in the pic of a young woman inducted into a bizarre family as a new surrogate girl.
the girl is the feature debut of writer/director Deshon, writer and consulting producer on ABC’s third season A million little things and writer on Netflix’s upcoming political thriller series The Night Officer.
Van Dien (Starship Troopers) plays Father, Dinh (HBO’s watchmen) is Mother. Alexander (The Last of Us Part II, Star Trek: Discovery, The OA) plays Brother and Ngô (sugar queen) marks her feature debut as the titular girl.
Described as a collaborative effort by Deshon and Ngô to challenge the limits of what color makers are meant to produce within the confines of stereotypical genres and story arcs, the girl features a diverse cast of mostly Vietnamese American actors, and was filmed with a 60% female cast and crew and 80% people of color.
“the girl is one of the most self-assured feature debuts we’ve seen in quite some time,” said Yellow Veil Pictures co-founder Joe Yanick. “Shot beautifully in 16mm, the film is both a gruesome chamber piece as it is a moving set about the intersection between family and religion.”
Says Deshon, “Our entire cast and creative team took a bold turn with this project to create something truly unique, and seeing our efforts resonate with Hughes, Justin and Joe in Yellow Veil is incredibly exciting. To be represented by a undertaking with such a thoughtful approach to the arthouse genre is a dream come true for a fledgling filmmaker.
the girl is produced by Deshon for Thirteenth Floor Pictures, Ngô, Tracy Chitupatham and Jes Vu; and produced by Sharunya Varriale, Ron Bradley, Matt Bradley, Daniel Goroshko, Laurent Fumeron and Rodolphe Sanzé of OneWorld Entertainment.
The deal was brokered by Yellow Veil Pictures co-founders Hugues Barbier, Justin Timms and Yanick, along with Sanzé & Deshon. Deshon is replaced by WME, Sugar23 and Fox Rothschild.
The market premiere will take place on May 23 at 9:30 a.m. in Cannes.
