After a rocky start at launch, sea of thieves has been firing on all cylinders lately. With continuous updates, new content, and shifting to seasonal content, sea of thieves has seen a resurgence with gamers on Xbox and PC. In fact, Rare even teased that 2022 could be the biggest year yet for sea of thieves with the amount of behind-the-scenes content planned, which also includes plenty of new PvE-style activities.

The push for PvE content really started last year when Rare and Disney announced a special Tall Tales expansion called A Pirate’s Life, which combined characters and other elements from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. This year, Sea of Thieves is getting an influx of more character and lore-driven content through adventures and mysteries like Forts of the Forgotten. However, Rare has even bigger plans in mind, giving players a fresh look at an all-new Athena’s Fortune Voyage for Pirate Legends launching on April 21.

Known as Legend of the Veil, this journey will allow players to finally interact with the Ancients, a civilization that has been referenced and discussed throughout the past in the game’s various elements. Legend of the Veil has three chapters before getting to the finale, and Rare hopes to keep players coming back through the use of dynamic missions. Whenever a crew selects Legend of the Veil, the first two chapters of the mission will be mixed between combat and puzzles while the third remains the cinematic finale.

Puzzle missions have three different challenges in sea of thieves. The first is the traditional ‘X’ that marks the spot-style treasure hunt, although Pirate Legends will find that the maps are zoomed in more, making it a little more difficult to discern which island the map is pointing to. Alternatively, players could find a hand-drawn image of a location on an island with a hint on where to search. Finally, players will see an island with all of the ancient symbols marked, except one of them will be wrong, indicating that the treasure is there.

Rare also teased that players will visit shipwreck graveyards during Legend of the Veil where they’ll hunt down the Captain’s Key to find the Veilstone, though treasure is also plentiful in addition to danger. Players will also face haunted islands, where the mysterious NPC Belle will be waiting to help solve the mysteries of the islands.

In the deep dive video, Rare also revealed some insight into the flagship final mission which features a massive tornado in the middle of the ocean with ghost ships battling below. Players will navigate through this awesome weather phenomenon, though players can also dynamically destroy parts of the environment, like the Ghost Garrison, in this finale as well. It takes that element of player impact from adventures like Shrouded Isles and kicks things up a notch.

sea of thieves is available now on PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series X.
