A Roosevelt man died climbing Bridal Veil Falls on Saturday night, the Utah County Sheriff’s Office said.
Adrian Vanderklis, 40, of Roosevelt, was climbing Provo Canyon above Bridal Veil Falls with his fiancee’s 9-year-old son when he apparently fell and died, according to a statement from the County Sheriff’s Office of the ‘Utah.
The exact way Vanderklis fell is not immediately obvious, according to the report, but it is possible that he tripped or slipped on loose material. He died immediately from the fall.
Shortly after 7 p.m. on Saturday, a woman called the sheriff’s office and reported that she could see her son, who was crying, but she couldn’t see her fiance and hadn’t been able to spot him for “several hours.” according to the report. .
Utah County Search and Rescue volunteers and the Utah Department of Public Service helicopter crew responded to the scene, where a member of the team discovered the body of Vanderklis at around 7:45 p.m., the statement explained. The body was found on a very steep and almost vertical slope, a third of a mile west of Bridal Veil Falls, at an elevation of 5,800 feet.
Search and rescue volunteers walked to the body and determined the fall was fatal.
As the area darkened, retrieving Vanderklis’ body became extremely dangerous and the operation was called off until 7 a.m. Sunday morning, the Utah County Sheriff’s Office statement said.
Search and rescue volunteers were transported to the location of Vanderklis’ body early Sunday morning, where they prepared and secured his body so it could be hoisted off the cliff, according to the report. The Department of Public Safety helicopter crew successfully transported Vanderklis’ body from the mountain, where the body was taken to the medical examiner’s office for an autopsy.
