AR Rahman justifies girls’ Islamic veil as freedom of choice

Oscar-winning actor AR Rahman has responded to criticism he received for “his daughter’s face covered with a veil,” Times Now reported. AR Rahman’s daughter Khatija recently shared the stage with her father at an event to celebrate Slumdog Millionaire’s 10 years. The film’s music earned Rahman two Academy awards.

Several users said they didn’t expect his daughter to be dressed so conservatively, assuming he forced her to follow such a dress style.

Addressing the controversy, the Dil Se composer tweeted a photo of his grip on Thursday of his two daughters and his wife, posing with Nita Ambani. The hashtag accompanying the photo reads #freedomtochoose.

While Khatija puts a veil on this photo, her sister Raheema and mother Sairaa are not.

Khatija is also said to have clarified that she was not forced by anyone to cover her face. She took to Facebook to share her thoughts on the matter. Khatija clarified that the veil has nothing to do with her parents.

“The veil was my choice with complete acceptance and honor. I am a mature, sane adult who knows how to make my choices in life, ”she said.

She added that everyone has the right to dress according to their choice and that she does the same. Khatija also urged people not to jump to conclusions or judge others without understanding the situation.

Rahman has three children – Khatija, Raheema and Ameen. Khatija also sang for her father in Enthiran
